Protect Oak Flat Prayer Gathering with Apache Stronghold - August 27

For the past year  the STL Catholic Worker Community (and Theo in particular) has been supporting Apache Stronghold as they fight to protect their sacred place at Oak Flat from being destroyed by copper mining. You can read about the Oak Flat legal case here or check out this informational video put together by the law firm representing Apache Stronghold here.

As they travel towards Washington DC, Apache Stronghold is collecting prayers and sharing about their struggle along the way. Please join us on the evening of Tuesday August 27th to pray with and learn from Apache Stronghold. We’ll be gathering at Tower Grove Park’s Stone Shelter at 6 PM to pray for and support the fight to protect sacred land from capitalist extraction.

The STL Catholic Worker Community will also be hosting the 20 or so folks from Apache Stronghold for a few days around the event on the 27th and we would appreciate your help. While exact needs will emerge in the coming days, we just thought we’d put it out there to see if there is anyone in this network who can help us by:

-supporting Apache Stronghold financially here
-joining in clean-up for an event or overnight hosting
-lending us a sound system (wired or battery powered)
-lending us blow up mattresses
-praying for Oak Flat

If you can help with any of the above please email me at StLouisCatholicWorker@gmail.com.

Dorothy Day and Anarchism discussion - September 2

While often lauded for her work among the poor, Dorothy Day’s believed her works of mercy to be more than just charity. Rather her work with the working class was part of what she repeatedly calls a “revolutionary” program. Join the STL Catholic Worker and some anarchist friends at 6 PM on Monday September 2nd for a discussion of Dorothy Day and Catholic Worker anarchism.

Our discussion will begin by talking about a few articles by Dorothy Day:
We Go On Record: CW Refuses Tax Exemption
December 1971 Dorothy Day interview in The Catholic Agitator
CW States Stand on Strikes
Catholic Worker Celebrates 3rd Birthday ; A Restatement of C. W. Aims and Ideals

The Broken Heart of America book discussion - September 23

Join us at 8617 Mora Ln for a discussion of the second half of The Broken Heart of America by Walter  Johnson. We'll be looking at chapters 6 through the end.

The Serviceberry - Clarification of Thought Book Club Thursday June 12th, 6 PM Read the book or just show up to hear the conversation. This month’s clarification of thought topic will center on Braiding Sweetgrass author Robin Wall Kimmerer’s The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World. From the cover: The serviceberry’s relationship with the natural world is an embodiment of reciprocity, interconnectedness, and gratitude. The tree distributes its wealth—its abundance of sweet, juicy berries—to meet the needs of its natural community. And this distribution ensures its own survival. As Kimmerer explains, ‘Serviceberries show us another model, one based upon reciprocity, w...

May 25th Potluck at Tower Grove Park!

The last Sunday of the month usually means StL CW potluck! May is one of the nice times of year to be outdoors in Missouri so we thought we’d gather at Tower Grove Park for this month’s shared meal.  Chrissy is providing the soccer ball! But you can bring a lawn chair or blanket along with your normal dish to share. (Or just come as you are!) We aren’t officially renting a pavilion or picnic site. Instead we're just going to grab a spot and set up some tables somewhere near the Kingshighway entrance to the park. We'll be somewhere west of the New Comfort Station ( here on Google Maps ). You should see us with a couple tables and chairs set up; we'll probably be somewhere in this orange square   Right now the weather can’t fully decide if we’ll be dry Sunday or not. No worries though! Our friend Olivia has offered her nearby apartment in the event of rain! If you think we might not be at the park because of the weather or if you just can’t locate us in the park, text or call...
