Happy Easter!
April is a special time for us at the StL CW. This month marks 3 years since we first publicly announced our dream of starting a new Catholic Worker project in St. Louis and two years since we got the keys to our CW community house!
Thanks for helping us make that dream come true and for all your continued support. We couldn’t keep on feeding and housing those in need or fighting the “filthy rotten system” (as Dorothy Day is said to have called it) without you.
We hope we’ll see you at a protest, burrito prep morning, or one of our April community events soon!
-CW Clarification of Thought Movie Night: Godzilla
Sunday, April 12
Soup at 6PM, Movie at 7PM
8617 Mora Ln.
A critique of nuclear warfare, and thus considered too controversial for American audiences, Ishiro Honda's 1954 'Gojira' did not receive a wide release in the United States until 2004. A classic of pacifist cinema, the film deftly uses metaphor to explore the themes of war and weapons of mass destruction.
Our friend Emily who is studying Godzilla for her PhD at SLU will introduce the film at 6:45. Discussion to follow.
(The film is in Japanese with English subtitles)
-Tree Walk and April Potluck at the Park
Sunday, April 19
Tree Walk at 4PM, Food at 5PM(ish)
Gather near TGP’s New Comfort Station
April is one of the nice months to be outdoors in St. Louis so we’re getting
out while we can!
Tower Grove Park’s head of forestry Joseph will start our afternoon with a tour of some of his favorite trees and share some basic knowledge with us tree beginners.
Hang out after as we break bread together. Feel free to bring a side to share and a picnic blanket or folding chair to sit on. We’ll be grilling the hot dogs/veggie dogs!
Can’t find us in the park? Unsure if we’re canceling because of predicted inclement weather? Reach out to Theo at 314-320-5129.
-“No War With Iran!” Weekly Vigil
Each Wednesday 3:30-4:30PM (weather permitting)
near The Old Courthouse
Come hold a sign with us as we say “No War!” and “Money For Human Needs Not Weapons!”
We’ve been meeting on the Kiener Plaza side of the building but may switch exact locations based on conditions. If you can’t find us or are wondering if we’ll be there because of rain, reach out to Theo at 314-320-5129.
Start reading now for May’s Catholic Worker clarification of thought book club where we’ll be discussing Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower.
This sci-fi novel follows Lauren Olamina, a young woman who can feel the pain of others, becomes displaced from her home, and and is forced to travel through a post-apocalyptic California beset by economic collapse and climate chaos. Discussion details TBD.
Thanks again for being a part of our community! See you soon!
The STL Catholic Worker Community
“When apparent stability disintegrates,
As it must--
God is Change--
People tend to give in
To fear and depression,
To need and greed.
When no influence is strong enough
To unify people
They divide.
They struggle,
One against one,
Group against group,
For survival, position, power.
They remember old hates and generate new ones,
The create chaos and nurture it.
They kill and kill and kill,
Until they are exhausted and destroyed,
Until they are conquered by outside forces,
Or until one of them becomes
A leader
Most will follow,
Or a tyrant
Most fear.”
